A CULTURAL CELEBRATION OF FOOD, ART AND COMMUNITY
In a collaborative effort with award-winning restaurants Fu’s Repair Shop, Cafe Caribbean and local food blogger Linda Hoang, FEED THE SOUL YEG is set to offer a Trini-Chinese Culinary pop-up and interactive walking tour in a celebration of Black history, food and culture.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Building on the success of Edmonton’s Feed The Soul dining week, volunteer-led Feed the Soul YEG will offer intimate, interactive and informative dining experiences featuring food, art and culture representing a fusion of cuisines from Trinidad and Tobago, Guangdong (Chinese) and Nigeria during Black Futures Month.
Throughout the month of February, Edmontonians are invited to explore downtown’s Black food scene with exciting events including the Callaloo + Chow: Trini-Chinese Culinary Pop-Up and a Food + Mural Walking Tour co-hosted by local food blogger Linda Hoang and Feed The Soul YEG founder, Rochelle Ignacio.
“There is so much rich history to be uncovered when it comes to exploring stories of food, migration and resistance from African and Caribbean diasporic communities.” says Rochelle Ignacio, founder of Feed the Soul YEG. “Through community collaboration we’re able to build off the success of our largely popular pop-ups and walking tours to offer a celebration of traditional and modern fusion cuisine, local art and narratives of resilience in a more intimate setting that connects the diner to ancestral culinary knowledge and stories.”
The Callaloo + Chow pop-up from February 19-23 is a collaboration between award-winning Fu’s Repair Shop’s Chef Winnie Chen and Cafe Caribbean’s Nadine Lewis and Pat Ross and will feature fusion dishes such as Callaloo and Chicken Chow Mein, Trini Fried Rice, Chinese 5-Spice Wings, Geera Pow (Bao) and Sorrel Margaritas hosted by Fu’s Repair Shop. The five-day pop-up launches with a ticketed opening reception on February 19 from 6pm-9pm where guests will get a preview of menu items and experience soca, dancehall and calypso from DJ Diamond. Tickets are $55 and available on EventBrite.
“We’re excited to be part of this collaboration because it allows us to amplify and support Black businesses in the City,” says Kyla Kazeil, co-founder of Fu’s Repair Shop. “This is a unique and delicious way to showcase the fusion of Chinese and Caribbean cooking, bringing together two food cultures filled with bold, distinct flavours.”
On February 22, Edmonton-based food and community builder Linda Hoang and Ignacio will co-host the 2nd Annual Black Futures Month food + mural walking tour. Participants will be treated to sample dishes and chef meet and greets from the Callaloo + Chow Pop-up and Downtown’s newest African restaurant Lochi Afro Nija. The tour will also include Instagrammable stops at murals created by local Black artists. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased on EventBrite.
“Coming on this walking tour is such a wonderful way to experience local food, culture and art, while exploring and supporting the vibrancy of downtown Edmonton” says Linda Hoang. “It’s also a fun and easy way to acknowledge Black Futures Month, and support Black-owned businesses and artists in the city.”
Feed the Soul YEG is dedicated to promoting and offering safe spaces for local Black-, Indigenous- and racialized-owned businesses. Led by volunteers, allies and supporters of Edmonton’s black community, Feed the Soul YEG’s flagship event Feed The Soul Dining Week is undergoing a brand-refresh and will be referred to as Black Futures Month Dining Week upon its return in 2026.
