Since we were already in PEI, we decided to make the trek to St. John’s to experience Newfoundland. Truth be told, it’s never been on our bucket list – but after the 48 hours we spent there, we recommend having this amazing little town on EVERY travel bucket list. It was magical and worth every minute on a plane and waiting in airports trying to get there.

Being a kid from the prairies and not knowing a lot about the East Coast – thank goodness for our travel companion and dear friend, Shawna Gardham (PR Director for Tofino’s amazing Wickkaninish Inn) who is 100% a coastal pro…Her network recommended many places to see and experience and we had a wonderful time exploring the island.

STAY: Alt Hotel St. Johns was where we hung our hats and wow…What a property! Located on the waterfront…Complimentary coffee, tea and snacks. The rooms were very spacious, service was impeccable and located right next to Raymonds.

EAT: We had to do what the locals do…First stop, Ches’s Famous Fish and Chips for a one piece meal and a Pineapple Crush to wash it down with. Did you know they serve stuffing and gravy with fish and chips? We also stopped in at The Merchant Tavern for delicious steak tartare and their made to order french madelines, Mallard Cottage (get an order of biscuits to-go to enjoy for breakfast the next day – they are the best we’ve ever had!), Classic Cafe East for Toutons (fried bread with maple syrup and molasses) and a visit to Quidi Vidi Brewing Co. for a couple flights! The highlight of our trip…Raymonds. There are no words to express how impressive and impactful this meal was. Everything from the wine pairings to not one but two desserts. It was flawless and we were delighted to have Top Chef Canada Ross Larkin present us with a couple extra treats from the kitchen. We’ll be talking about this dinner for a really long time. Check out the pics here.
